อนันตริยกรรมหมายถึงกรรมหนักที่สุด (ครุกรรม)
ฝ่ายบาปอกุศล ซึ่งให้ผลทันที มี 5 อย่าง ได้แก่
มาตุฆาต (ฆ่ามารดา),
ปิตุฆาต (ฆ่าบิดา),
อรหันตฆาต (ฆ่าพระอรหันต์),
โลหิตุปบาท (ทำร้ายพระพุทธเจ้าจนถึงพระโลหิตห้อขึ้นไป เช่น พระเทวทัตได้ทำร้ายพระพุทธองค์ในสมัยพุทธกาล)
และสังฆเภท (ยุยงสงฆ์ให้แตกกัน ทำลายสงฆ์)
ในพุทธศาสนามีการจำแนกประเภทของกรรมออกเป็น 2 ประเภทหลักๆ คือ
บาปกรรม (อกุศลกรรม)
และบุญกรรม (กุศลกรรม) ¹.
บาปกรรมหมายถึงการกระทำที่ไม่ถูกต้องและให้ผลเป็นความทุกข์
เช่นการทำอกุศลกรรมหรือทำบาปอกุศล ¹.
อนันตริยกรรมเป็นหนึ่งในบาปกรรมที่หนักที่สุดและให้ผลทันที ³.
ในขณะเดียวกันบุญกรรมหมายถึงการกระทำที่ถูกต้องและให้ผลเป็นความสุข เช่นการทำกุศลกรรม ¹
อนันตริยกรรม 4 ประการแรก คือ มาตุฆาต ปิตุฆาต อรหันตฆาต และโลหิตตุปบาท จัดเป็นสาธารณอนันตริยกรรม คือ เป็นอนันตริยกรรมที่ทั่วไปแก่บรรพชิตและคฤหัสถ์ทั้งหลาย หมายความว่า บรรพชิตก็ทำได้ คฤหัสถ์ก็ทำได้
ในส่วนของโทษหนักเบา และลำดับการให้ผลก่อนหลัง ของอนันตริยกรรม เรียงลำดับจากแรงที่สุดลงไป ได้ดังนี้
สังฆเภทอนันตริยกรรม (หนักที่สุด เพราะทำให้พระพุทธศาสนาเสื่อมเสีย)
โลหิตุปบาทอนันตริยกรรม (สำคัญมาก พระศรีอริยเมตไตรย)
อรหันตฆาตอนันตริยกรรม (สำคัญปานกลาง เพราะพระอรหันต์ผู้ซึ่งไม่เบียดเบียนใครเลยและยังเป็นที่เคารพศรัทธาของชาวบ้าน)
มาตุฆาตปิตุฆาตอนันตริยกรรม (สำคัญน้อยกว่าอนันตริยกรรมอื่น ๆ เพราะถือว่าอยู่ในเพศฆราวาส)
